Compare rates, not just starting points

Tank A holds $120 L$ and drains at $6 L/min$ : $A (t) = 120 - 6 t$ Tank B drains at a constant rate: it holds $90 L$ at $0 min$ and $66 L$ at $4 min$ . Will they ever hold the same amount before either empties? Explain.

02 · A student’s stuck point

“Tank A starts with more, so I think it will reach Tank B eventually. I’m not sure how to compare an equation with two measurements.”

03 · Explore a response from Mr. Q

Find Tank B’s change in volume per minute. Compare it with the coefficient of $t$ in $A (t)$ .

04 · The student reasons

“B’s rate is $\frac{66 - 90}{4} = - 6 L/min$ . Both lose $6 L$ each minute, so the $30 L$ gap stays constant. They won’t match before either empties.”

05 · Apply the idea

Suppose B instead drains at $3 L/min$ . Write $B (t)$ , then decide whether the volumes meet while both tanks still contain water. Explain what changed.

With Mr. Q, the aim is learning support that fits his pace and the time he has after sports practice, even when arranging a live tutoring session is difficult. He still works through the ideas himself.

With Mr. Q, the aim is support she can use at her own pace around dance and the rest of her day. A live tutor’s schedule may not match hers; the learning support should fit the learner.
